Log out of ReadCube. We present 10 in situ cosmogenic exposure ages from two moraines on the Isle of Skye. The Strollamus medial moraine was deposited during deglaciation of the Devensian ice sheet and yields a mean exposure age from five samples of The moraine age indicates that a significant ice mass existed on Skye at the time of a regional readvance recorded in Wester Ross, northwest Scotland.
Taken at face value the ages suggest that deglaciation did not occur until well into Greenland Interstade 1. These ages suggest that the maximum extent may have been reached late in the stadial and that some glaciers may have remained active until after the climatic amelioration that marks its end. The glory days of the old fishing fleets may be long gone, but the historic harbours and sheltered bays of the east coast are still packed with character and are attracting increasing numbers of yachtsmen. Some of these places were among the busiest ports in Europe in the days of the herring drifters, and an almost tangible sense of local pride lingers on in the sea air. This welcome trend has been seen all the way from the border at Berwick to Wick in the far north.
Often these facilities are within former fishing harbours and, while some may be smaller than others, they all offer a warm welcome.
